Day 49 - Tuesday 27 June 2017
Abbotsbury to Weymouth (15.1 miles)
Caught the bus out to Abbotsbury and travelling along the coast road we could see that the weather forecast was true to form today - overcast at the moment with the threat of a downpour around 1400. There is an excellent shop in the village which we have been to many times and we relieved them of a couple of their excellent pasties. Once clear of The Swannery entrance the path moved inland over fields inland to circle it - rejoining the West Fleet below the village of Langton Herring.
Now began a boring, flat trudge through the Nature Reserve - the only highlight was having lunch sat on a Pill Box near Butterstreet Cove. Near Chickerell, the dullness of this section was made worse by the arrival of you've guessed it - rain - which really chucked it down as we diverted around the firing range which was in use today. Not a pretty transit to Ferrybridge unfortunately and the torrential rain made it worse than it probably was. Crossing the causeway road at Ferrybridge there was a long walk in through the outskirts of Weymouth - again in the pouring rain.
At last we reached the harbour where we decamped into The Ship Inn for a bit of supper before making our way to the King George III statue and the Bus Stop - sadly not the best of days but you have to take the rough with the smooth on a Long Distance Path. Caught the 1805 bus back to Bridport where we could enjoy our rest day tomorrow - and dry out!!.

Leaving Abbotsbury - love the sign
St Nicholas Church, Abbotsbury
The path passes the entrance to the Swannery - no time today unfortunately
As we were walking beyond Ferrybridge and into central Weymouth, it was probably something like 13 for us
Are you two coming or what?
A Fleet Lagoon panoramic
Very quiet here as we passed the Fleet Lagoon Nature Reserve
The path passes to the south of these gallops between West and East Fleet - however no horses were seen today
Placid cows near East Fleet
Sign of the times as we arrive at Ferrybridge - such a shame
From Ferrybridge the path heads into Weymouth via a cycle path - and it had started raining heavily
The Buxton Monument at Bincleaves Green, Weymouth
Thomas Fowell Buxton, former MP for Weymouth and Melcombe Regis was an anti-slavery campaigner - the monument was erected following a long campaign for the activist to be recognised locally.
