The Visitors Centre has a very good cafe which is dog friendly - they even provide water, towels.......................
................ and of course treats
The Visitors Centre has plenty of parking and it is free to leave your car here whilst on your walk
From the Visitor Centre the route heads along the access road that serves both Harestanes and the Monteviot Estate
The route passes some large, and very old Beech Trees
The path headed along The St Cuthbert's Way for a few hundred yards before turning off for Peniel Heugh
The Monteviot Estate, the seat of the Marquess of Lothian
The entrance to the Monteviot Estate - the route we took from Harestanes is just through the gates to the right
The farm buildings at Woodside
Our first view of the Waterloo Monument on Peniel Heugh
Although Peniel Heugh is in view, the access gate is a little further on through the woods
From the kissing gate we simply made a beeline for the monument along a grassy path
As is tradition - Fudge on the summit of Peniel Heugh
The Waterloo Monument and the summit of Peniel Heugh. There is no way I was lifting Fudge up on to the top of that!
The summit of Peniel Heugh looking to The Eildon Hills
The devil is in the detail
The plaque on the face of the Waterloo Monument - we assumed the protective grating was to prevent it either getting nicked or to stop people from adorning it with graffiti.
A worms eye view of the Waterloo Monument
The tower is not open to the public, although a key to the monument can be borrowed at a small cost from the Lothian Estates Office in nearby Bonjedward. Inside the monument is a spiral staircase leading to the balcony which encircles the top of the tower.

From the monument a path heads north west to a track
After a brief transit through woodland we popped out onto a quiet lane running alongside a small tarn
From the lane we turned off on to The St Cuthbert's Way along Dere Street Roman Road
The Woodside Walled Garden Tearoom is about 100 yards off route near the end of the walk.
I know that this was our second cafe visit of the day but who's counting? They do very nice cake.
