Day 25 - Saturday 3 June 2017
Porthleven to Lizard (15.3 miles)
Having left the cottage as we found it, Brian picked us up from Penzance and dropped us off in Porthleven. It was great to see him and hopefully it will not be too long before we meet him and his family again. Logistically, hiring the cottage in Penzance could not have worked out better for us - centrally located for Penzance's amenities plus close to the Bus Station. Whilst it wasn't palatial it didn't need to be.
A dull start to the day and we were to get a bit of rain shortly after leaving however the afternoon would brighten up thankfully. Met Chris coming out of Porthleven just before Loe Bar and we decided to walk together today. Reaching St Winwaloe Church the promised rain started but thankfully did not last long. At The Marconi Monument we met a German lady who Chris had bumped into over the last few days and who, like us was walking the path. When Chris introduced us I thought she said her name was "Birdshit" and I asked her to repeat it - her name was actually "Birgit" - easy mistake to make. From the Monument the sun came out - just in time for our lunch stop at Mullion Cove. The walking terrain was super from here and the conditions were just right - sunny with light breezes.
Just after Kynance Cove, Chris's son Jason met us and we all walked in together to Venton Hill Point where our walking companions headed off to find their campsite. At the Lizard we had pre arranged to meet some friends, Jan & Ted with their lovely Cocker Spaniel Mollie - after a quick chat we headed off to find Hellarcher Farm, our digs for the night. We were met at Hellarcher by the lovely Jenny who gave us some iced Orange Juice and home made Scones. After settling in we met up with Jan & Ted in The Tap House for dinner where we bumped in to Pam & the chap we met in Woolacombe who we was now introduced to as Simon.

Leaving Porthleven for Loe Bar
At the time of writing this was the situation with the South West Coast Path near Loe Bar.
Due to cliff erosion the path has been diverted as detailed above - this will add on just under 2 miles to your route for this section.

In 1900 the Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi undertook ground breaking wireless experiments on The Lizard. From a pair of sites – a hut on the coast near Lizard village, then a purpose-built facility near the village of Poldhu where he worked on the generation and transmission of wireless radio signals.

The Cannon near Mullion Cove - found in Victorian times, it is thought to have come from a ship that perished on the rocks below
It has had a bit of a facelift since I stayed here in 2001
These were obviously left behind by somebody in the Car Park opposite The Mullion Cove Hotel - an expensive loss
