Walk Description
A mixed bag weather wise today therefore we took our chances and made the journey to Peter House Farm to walk along the Cumbria Way to climb Bakestall & Great Calva. We had attempted Great Calva from Mosedale a few months ago but decided against making the ascent due to the mileage our pup was able to do in one day.
There is ample parking at Peter House Farm and the excellent path leaves the road and gently rises along the Cumbria Way to reach Dash Falls or Whitewater Dash to give its correct name. Shortly after the falls comes the turning to the right to climb up Birkett Edge to the summit of Bakestall. The ascent to the summit is quite a workout and is worth taking your time over. We made our way back down exactly the same way and then made the long but enjoyable journey to Dead Beck to take the intermittent path and gentle rise up to Great Calva. Shortly before reaching the summit we were dumped on by the rain and on reaching the top could see very little. We hung around for a short time and the visibility did improve enough for us to look right down the geological fault which runs through the centre of the Lake District towards Thirlmere.
We made our descent back down to the Cumbria Way and whilst the return journey to Peter House may appear a long trudge there are fine views to be had over the Northern Fells.
