Route Map
Early doors in Patterdale. A popular start for many of our walks in the area is the excellent Car Park at the King George V Sports Field. £5 for the day and the money paid goes back into the community for the upkeep of the facilities. Arnison Crag provides the backdrop.
The honesty box where one parts with 5 Quid. Just a shame this was a Tuesday eh!
Looking over the playing field to Place Fell with Boredale Hause right of centre
Leaving the Car Park we follow the road alongside the beck to Grisedale Bridge. At the junction ahead we turned to the right and walked along the A592 towards Patterdale.
Once through Patterdale a left turn off the A592 leads to Rooking along an access lane for the small number of houses in this tiny hamlet. The lane eventually runs out and becomes an access track for Side Farm. Here we turned right to head up to Boredale Hause on the popular Coast to Coast Path.
Looking back to Rooking with Birks on the left & Birkhouse Moor to the right
The path to Boredale Hause splits just below this Victorian seat. There is no real advantage as to which path is taken.
Arnison Crag & Birks through the trees as we continue the ascent to Boredale Hause
Always worth stopping to look back on the ascent to Boredale Hause. Ullswater now in view with Heron Pike & Glenridding Dodd to the rear of the lake.
Cheesy grin time apart from Fudge who just wants to arse about in the white stuff
Someone has been out with the icing sugar as we look over to Arnison Crag & Birks
The views really do open out as height is gained
Looking up the Kirkstone Pass to Brothers Water with Red Screes centre and Caudale Moor to the left
A panorama of the Fairfield & Helvellyn ranges
A very cold and icy Boredale Hause
Looking to Round How on Place Fell
From Boredale Hause the path heads into the valley of Boredale which is a lovely wander and normally devoid of other walkers. Up ahead is Hallin Fell with todays destination of Beda Fell over to the right.
The jury is out as to what this is. It is situated to the left of the path and could be either a bricked up water tank that formed part of the Hayeswater to Penrith aqueduct or a retaining wall to stop slippage. Either way, it appears solid and well built.
The view back up to Boredale Hause
The farm buildings at Boredale Head
Winter Crag over to the left with the lower slopes of Beda Fell to the right
The bridge over Boredale Beck at Nettleslack looking back to Place Fell. That is not water on the road but sheet ice.
The farm at Garth Heads. The route turns right here and through the gate ahead to climb over Howsteadbrow.
Garth Heads from Howsteadbrow
Place Fell's long ridge. Place Fell is to the left with High Dodd centre and Cat Crag on Sleet Fell to the right.
Looking back down the Boredale valley from the climb to Winter Crag
A closer look at Cat Crag & Sleet Fell
The seat on Winter Crag looking to Hallin Fell
Looking across Howe Grain to Steel Knotts (Pikeawassa) with Arthur's Pike, Bonscale Pike & Loadpot Hill to the rear
Looking south over Howe Grain to Brownthwaite Crag, Gowk Hill & Wether Hill
Leaving Winter Crag for Beda Fell with Hallin Fell to the rear
The final ascent up on to Beda Fell's summit, Beda Head - by this time it was becoming very icy underfoot
Blencathra in the distance over Boredale & High Dodd
The path reaches a prominent cairn however don't be fooled - this is not the summit. Beda Head, the summit lies a further 210 yards away.
Ada & Fudge on the summit of Beda Fell looking to High Raise, Rampsgill Head, The Nab & Rest Dodd
Geoff, Janet & Roxy on the summit of Beda Fell
From the summit it was now time to make our way back to Boredale Hause along the ridge
Place Fell and the head of Boredale from Beda Fell
Continuing along the ridge in fantastic light
As can be seen, the wind was starting to get up as we look over to Rest Dodd
Our route back to Boredale Hause would take us along the path ahead which sweeps left then right below Bedafell Knott
Looking back to our route along the ridge to Beda Fell

Descending from Boredale Hause back to Patterdale
Back at Rooking - we would now return to the Car Park through the gate via Side Farm
The access track to Side Farm which leads to the A592 - Place fell is behind us
Somebody has had a great day on the fells
