Route Map
Swale View - our holiday cottage at Low Row. Dog friendly & spacious - the link is here
Leaving Low Row the route turns right along the B6270 and then switches back on itself immediately to head up a farm access track
It has clearly been a bit dry here lately and here was no need to cross via the small bridge
Crackpot Moor from above Low Row
The path drops down to the B6270 once more at the entrance to Low Row. Ahead is the parking spot mentioned above in the walk details.
At the junction where the parking area is the route drops down on the Crackpot road towards Isles Bridge
Isles Bridge and the River Swale
The River Swale looking towards Gunnerside from Isles Bridge
Just after Isles Bridge the route leaves the main road to turn left on the access road to Low Houses. We were now on the Swale Trail which is a mountain bike route between Keld & Reeth.
Skull art at Low Houses
Passing through Low Houses we came across a group of bovines enjoying their breakfast
Continuing along the Swale Trail we were now heading towards Low Whita along a delightful section of path known as Low Lane
Looking across to Low Row from Low Lane
The classic building so common around this area and the Yorkshire Dales. This is probably used as a feed storage barn.
Passing How Hill near Low Whita. On top of this mound are the remains of a small Iron Age settlement defended by a bank & ditch
Scabba Wath Bridge
Continuing above the Swale the terrain became grassy as we headed down to the river bank
Looking across to Healaugh - we would pass through here on our way back to Low Row
Dropping gently to our crossing point over the Swale
The stepping stones across the Swale which lead to a parallel path to Reeth on the northern bank. We would be crossing further upstream at the Suspension Bridge and continue on to the village from there.
What's he seen I wonder?
Make hay whilst the sun shines - and it was certainly shining today
Nearing the suspension bridge as we continue along the southern bank of the Swale
Looking across to the path on the northern bank - what a beautiful river the Swale is.
Reeth Suspension Bridge. The bridge was originally constructed in the 1920’s and was rebuilt in 2002 after being washed away. Ordinarily the walk would cross the bridge and head to the right however the path a bit further on is seriously eroded. As a result of this a diversion in place which heads to the left therefore the walker is diverted back towards Healaugh for about 200 meters before switching back once more towards Reeth.
Another view of the suspension bridge
The Reeth Evangelical Congregational Church and a farmer with a great sense of humour
The Village Green in Reeth - a very pleasant place to sit and watch the world go by.
Fudge sits and contemplates world affairs and more importantly when will he next eat again
Reeth Bridge over the River Swale
Heading along the Coast to Coast path to Grinton near Low Fremington
The Bridge Inn at Grinton - looking into the sun unfortunately
From Grinton the route returns to follow the Swale Trail back towards the suspension bridge
Approaching the suspension bridge
Crossing the suspension bridge for the second time - we would head once more to the left but carry on past the diversion
Heading towards Healaugh along the northern bank of the River Swale
It was a warm day therefore it was important to give Fudge plenty of opportunity to cool off
Healaugh and The Manor House
Once through Healaugh the route heads off the B6270 towards Kearton - Fudge & Angie take the opportunity to get out of the sun
Passing Park Hall
Dropping down into Low Row near the end of the walk - I wonder if the pub is open?
Of course it was!
