The Cumbria Way
Introduction
In most people's eyes, at give or take 73 miles the Cumbria Way can hardly be considered a "long" distance path. However what people may not realise is that packed into those 73 or so miles is some of the most fantastic scenery and challenging terrain. The route starts in the south of the county in the market town of Ulverston, famously known for being the birthplace of Stan Laurel and finishes in the city of Carlisle.
The route is particularly well way marked, is varied on established paths and whilst the way transits through the mountainous Lake District, for the most part it wends its way via the valley bottoms. That said, you do not have to be a purist and there are certainly many options to get up into the high fells without diverting too far from the route.
The traditional route is a mixture of gentle farmland at both ends of the map with the middle section of the walk containing three steady climbs - up the Stake Pass in Langdale, the Wainwright Fell of Latrigg and a climb on to the highest point of The Cumbria Way to High Pike. Of course the route also passes through the best of what Cumbria has to offer - its beautiful villages containing cafes and pubs to keep you sustained throughout this wonderful transit.
Read on to see how we got on in both the planning stages and the walk itself.
