Walk Description
Dave called back to the ship early therefore had to curtail our break but still managed to get up Haystacks before driving back to Portsmouth. This is a delightful, scenic walk and it is easy to see why people like the fell of Haystacks so much. We started at Gatesgarth Farm and walked over Peggy's Bridge to join the Scarth Gap Pass. This is a delightful stretch of path giving superb views back over to Buttermere and Crummock although you do have to remember to stop and look back!
There is a bit of easy scrambling to attain the Summit but once on top the views make it all worth while. The vast panorama of the Buttermere valley opens up before you and it would be easy just to stay on the summit all day and take it in. After a nice lunch we made our way the short distance down to Innominate Tarn to pay our respects to Wainwright whose ashes were scattered here in 1991. The descent via Warnscale Bottom is an easy transit back to the start at Gatesgarth.
