Souther Fell - Tuesday 30 April 2013
Mungrisdale - Low Beckside - Souther Fell - Mungrisdale
Opposite the Village Hall in Mungrisdale (Donation) - Grid Ref NY364302
Good paths mainly with a steep descent off the north ridge back down to Mungrisdale. The visibility was good therefore we made a pathless beeline for the summit on the outward route where the going was springy underfoot.
Overcast with good visibility
OL5 (The English Lakes - North Eastern Area)
Having arrived back in the Lakes for a couple of weeks we were lucky enough to have time for a quick early evening jaunt up Souther (pronounced Suit-er) Fell. The walk starts from the pretty village of Mungrisdale, a starting point for a fair few walks up the Northern Fells. There is plenty of verge parking on the left as you approach the village from the A66 and there is also parking opposite the Village Hall where a donation is requested.
Leaving Mungrisdale we headed south west to gain the summit and to the east of the ascent we had fine views of the Far Eastern Fells and The Dodds. Reaching the summit there are superb views over to Blencathra and even as far as The Scafells, Bowfell and The Crinkles. Heading off the top we enjoyed a nice flat walk along the north ridge of the fell before dropping steeply back down to Mungrisdale and a welcome drink in The Mill Inn.
If you have a spare couple of hours then climbing Souther Fell is a good way to spend them.

.... and we did
Mill Inn, Mungrisdale - we had a nice cold drink in here at the end. Nice pub with lots of character.

On the ascent with the Mell Fell brothers to the left - Little & Great
The understated summit of Souther Fell with Great Dodd and Clough Head behind. Fudge is wearing his latest perfume - "Eau du Tarn"
Blencathra over the top of Bannerdale Crags - the light was not great today
The ridge from Bannerdale Crags to Bowscale Fell
Clough Head to the left and in the distance Crinkle Crags, Bowfell, Esk Pike, Scafell Pike, Lingmell, Great Gable, Brandreth & Kirk Fell
