Walk Description

Picture
The light was not particularly good for photographs today but we still ventured out anyway. The walk took in two fells we had never visited before - first we were off up Silver How and then would make our way over to the very popular Loughrigg Fell. The walk starts in Grasmere and after being fleeced royally by the Car Park Charge off we went.

We headed out to Wordsworth's former home at Allan Bank before rising gently on the open fell side to reach the summit of Silver How. The ascent is very pleasant with wide ranging views and once on the summit the fells really open out before you. Leaving Silver How on a good path we headed over undulating ground to Dow Bank before dropping steeply to the road at High Close Youth Hostel.

A short road walk and we then reached a gate which leads on to a good path which heads steeply up to the Trig Point on the summit of Loughrigg Fell. Again the views are splendid for little effort, particularly over towards Windermere. From the summit we retraced our steps back down to the gate and headed through Red Bank Wood before reaching the lane that we followed back to Grasmere.
