Day 10 - Monday 20 June 2016

Danby Wiske to Ingleby Cross (10 miles)

Picture
Broke with tradition today - after 9 Full Englishes on the bounce it was just a Bacon Sandwich this morning. Today was a shortish leg of 10 miles from Danby Wiske back to our B&B at Ingleby Cross. We were in for more overcast weather but the sun was supposed to shine from midday and so it proved. We were given a lift back to Danby Wiske by Keith who was the B&B owner Bev's Dad.

And off we go again - Day 10
From Danby Wiske the route headed out of the village on a quiet road as far as Lazenby Hall Farm where we made our way along a grassy path. After about 200 yards we entered a Rape field and here was where the fun started. Transiting the field was a nightmare as we could barely see the path beneath our feet and what we could see was extremely muddy, slippy and a tad dangerous to be honest. Apart from a bit of road walking at Oaktree Hill, it was precarious walking all the way to Moor House Farm.

From Moor House Farm the terrain improved and we then made our way through another farm at Northfield. In 2012 there was an honesty refreshment table left out but there was no sign of that today. Meeting a road we turned right then left up the access track for Wray House Farm and we could just make out a group of about 8 walkers up ahead. This time it was not the HF bunch but a group of friends from Bristol who we found out later were also staying at Park House. At Wray House Farm there was a fridge and before opening it we were full of hope for snacks etc but somebody had beaten us to it - it was just full of bottled water!

Alas poor Yorick - the Farmer at Wray House Farm wasn't looking too well
From the farm the route crossed the main railway line to pass over Ing Beck to reach a road. This road soon became a rough track and brought us out near East Harlsey where we met up with the Kiwis and the couple from Northallerton. Crossing over the road, we headed first past Sydal Lodge and then over fields to reach the ruined farm at Brecken Hill. The road now zig zagged its way to reach the very busy A19. People have been crying out for a bridge to be built here as the route is so popular but as yet it is just a case of waiting for a gap in the traffic and running like crazy to cross this extremely busy dual carriageway.

Crossing the A19 - pick a time then leg it
The dilemma of the A19 over with, it was now a short stroll to reach to village of Ingleby Arncliffe and an even shorter walk to the neighbouring village of Ingleby Cross. There is a pub here called The Blue Bell and as the sun had come out it was only right and proper that we stopped for a pint of something cold. The Bristol Mob arrived shortly after and we spent half an hour or so chatting to them before making our way over the A172 to walk up the hill back to Park House and another glass of Prosecco.

With Bev and one of the Bristol Mob at Park House plus another Team Walsh photo
We were joined at the dinner table tonight by the Bristol Mob who were also staying at Park House plus there were 2 guests who had not turned up yet - apparently they were walking over from Richmond which was 23 miles distant. As we were finishing our meal they arrived and we were glad to see that it was Paddy & Pamela who walked in through the door - we had not seen them since Greenup Edge on Day 3. We asked them if they had seen any of the other walkers which they had and they also informed us that Joel & Hannah had packed it in at Kirkby Stephen which was a real shame.

After dinner we all retired to the lounge to watch England play Slovenia in the European Championships - we all wish we hadn't bothered!
