Walk Description

Picture
Our second walk of the day. We made the short drive along the western edge of Ladybower Reservoir to park up at Fairholmes Visitor Centre and after a quick lunch we walked underneath the huge dam separating Ladybower from the Upper Derwent Reservoir and made our way along the edge of Hancock Plantation. From the plantation edge the path tuns right and climbs gradually to the large cairn on Lost Lad. From the cairn it is a fine ridge walk over Derwent Edge where there are superb views to be had and there are also some fine gritstone rock formations to view such as the Cakes of Bread, Salt Cellar and The Coach & Horses. Once past the Coach & Horses, aka The Wheel Stones, the path starts its descent down to the lost village of Derwent, the majority of which is now buried beneath Ladybower Reservoir. Once down at Derwent, there is a short walk along a quiet road back to the start at Fairholmes.
