Route Map
We started the walk from Great Crosthwaite - the route crosses over the road to head down Brundholme which is the right turn opposite. From the start we would be on the route of The Cumbria Way.
Heading down Brundholme then on to Briar Rigg. Just past the sign is the entrance to a path which keeps the walker off what can at times be a busy road.
The path reaches a hand gate which leads us back to Brundholme. The path continues to the right onward to Fitz Park & Keswick Town Centre
From Brundholme we headed on to Briar Rigg to reach the left hand turn off on to Spooney Green Lane
The North Western Fells from Spooney Green Lane
The route crosses the A66 - thankfully by way of a footbridge
Once over the footbridge we pass Spooney Green House
Just past Spooney Green House the route enters Latrigg Woods
Continuing on through Latrigg Woods. The woods contain a myriad of paths some of which lead to a direct ascent up on to Latrigg. However, for the views just keep branching off to the left.
See what I mean? The North Western Fells from the edge of Latrigg Woods.
The route reaches an old stone gate post - again keep to the left
Left again!
Exiting Latrigg Woods just above Round How. It was starting to get pretty icy underfoot therefore it would not be long until the micro spikes were deployed.
Another superb view of the North Western Fells
The Skiddaw group from Mallen Dodd
Really icy underfoot now therefore on micro spikes
At a hairpin bend at Grid Reference NY 27731 25349 the route leaves the Cumbria Way to begin the gradual climb to Latrigg summit. Staying on the original path leads to the Car Park at Gale Road.
Grisedale Pike to the left, the Whinlatter Fells centre and Dodd over to the right
Another hairpin bend, this time near the remains of a stone gatepost as we continue on towards Latrigg
Latrigg's summit ridge now in view as we contour around the side of Mallen Dodd
Looking back to our outward route which is the lower path. The upper path is the one coming up from the popular Gale Road Car Park - this path is wheelchair friendly however today would be a bit of a struggle due to the amount of snow and ice on the ground.
The superb view from near Latrigg's summit (Click Play to view)
Angie at the seat near the summit of Latrigg
The seat on Latrigg is a popular spot - I wonder why?? The actual summit of Latrigg lies 320 yards to the east.
Keswick below with Derwentwater and the North Western Fells beyond
Aye it's a grand spot for very little effort
Heading for Latrigg's summit from the seat
Looking back to the seat from near the summit of Latrigg
Nearing the summit, Blease Fell on Blencathra comes into view with Hall's Fell Ridge beyond. The two fells to the right are Great Mell Fell & Little Mell Fell
The understated summit of Latrigg
The summit of Latrigg looking to Bleaberry Fell, Walla Crag, Derwentwater & the North Western Fells
Our route continued over the top of the summit along the ridge
Looking back to Latrigg's summit from further along the ridge
From the ridge the path drops gently down to a gate which is over to the left along the hedge line ............
..... and here it is. We were now on the track coming in from Gale Road Car Park towards Wescoe & Threlkeld
The track is followed for 3/4 a mile to reach a way mark for the Woodland Walk back to Keswick
Just on from the sign, the route passes through a gate to join a terrace path
The terrace path continues above Brundlholme Wood
This was a lovely section of the walk along the terrace with great views over to Clough Head, The Dodds & the Helvellyn Range
At Grid Reference NY 28338 24319 the path joins a rough road above Forge Brow. The path heading uphill can be taken also and this leads to Spooney Green Lane.
Crossing the bridge over the A66 - this bridge is 1/2 mile further east than the one crossed earlier
Someone with a sense of humour at Windebrowe
Looking over fields towards Spooney Green Lane
Heading down Briar Rigg back to Keswick after another lovely days walking
