Day 15 - Wednesday 20 June 2018
Levisham to Appleton-le-Moors (13 miles)
Super breakfast in The Horseshoe Inn and a really great stay too - the pub was very busy with guests this morning and is clearly doing well. Not the cheapest stay we had but bearing in mind the cost we feel we did get value for money. The weather this morning was overcast, humid and had a bit of drizzle in the air and didn't look as though it was going to improve anytime soon as we headed out of Levisham.
The terrain today looked like being a bit of a mixed bag. From the village the route headed through woodland to reach the former railway halt at Farwath and it was here we had a short downpour as we crossed the railway line to head steeply up the western side of Newton Dale. Reaching Newton Rawcliffe at midday there were mild hopes of the village pub being open but how silly of us to assume this - after all it was midweek in Summer - why should it be? Suffice to say it was shut. Hopes dashed we meandered on and as we headed over Stony Moor my phone rang - it was Radio York who had heard of our walk via Lynn at Spaniel Aid and wanted to interview us live on the Breakfast Show from Appleton-le Moors tomorrow morning. It would mean an early start but this was an ideal opportunity to give the charity a decent plug and in turn raise more money for them. It would also be a new experience for us too - live Radio.
Near to High Cawthorn we spotted another Deer who eyed us suspiciously for a minute or so before wandering off into the undergrowth. By this time, whilst the weather remained overcast the humidity increased and it was a warm old trudge along the endless tarmac road to finally reach the village of Cropton - and into the arms of the lovely pub there, The New Inn which was open. With a cool drink and a bag of Pipers inside us and with Fudge also suitably refreshed we continued on to reach Appleton Mill Farm and the steep climb which delivered us into the village of Appleton-le-Moors and our B&B The Moors Inn. As we enjoyed a cold beer outside the pub amongst the copious amounts of sheep shit that festooned the road through the village we contemplated the day - varied terrain but thoroughly enjoyable.

Fudge going through his pre walk paw waxing routine at Levisham - he tolerates it rather than enjoys it
Levisham's main thoroughfare - such a lovely village
The Horseshoe Inn at Levisham - the start point for the day
The valley church of St Mary the Virgin near Mill Farm.
Sadly the church is now a controlled ruin and whilst the chancel still retains a roof, the nave is now an empty unroofed shell.

The railway cottages at Farwath. Farwath Station was a small railway halt located between Pickering and Levisham, however the halt was subsequently closed and demolished.
The pre decimal trespassing sign at Farwath
From Farwath the route continued on a broad track alongside Newton Dale
The White Swan at Newton-on-Rawcliffe - sadly for us it was shut!!
The Tabular Hills signpost at Newton-on-Rawcliffe - 6 miles to Cropton which has a pub, hopefully open!
Passing through the hamlet of Stape
High Cawthorn Farm
The long road into Cropton - notice how Fudge walks on the grass verge to save his paws
Here at last - now where is that boozer?
Well, well, well - we are getting warmer.....
